Lolly!!
We ask Lolly the questions that matter!
Hi,
Lolly. Have you always wanted to be a pop star?
"The issue of childhood ambition provides a valid platform to explore the wider subject of psychological engineering. From an early age I felt stifled and intimidated by my overbearing stepfather. The idea that I had any part in the events which led me to parade my deep seated insecurities through a need to have my music approved by others is so far fetched as to be insulting. So to answer your question, acting in a soap was good experience, but music has always been my first love."
Do you prefer cereal or a cooked breakfast?
"On balance, I’d have to say cereal. The so-called "Great British Breakfast" to me represents all that is disgusting about our ‘snouts-in-the-trough’ mentality, our endless, mindless consumerism in the face of devestating poverty in the Third World. Yes, cereal definitely - especially Coco-Pops (I’m really glad they changed the name back from
Choco-Krispies)."
Is Lolly your real name?
"No, it is in fact my stage name. I chose to perform under an assumed moniker to introduce an undercurrent to my image, that undercurrent being that ‘names’ as we perceive them are ultimately meaningless labels forced upon us almost at birth by faceless autocrats, viz - our parents. But I like it, it’s more fun than
Bronwyn."
Is there a special guy at the moment?
"Well, Leonard Cohen, obviously. A vastly undervalued man, who speaks to the soul as though he lived in one’s subconscious, and yet remains an enigma to this day. He has always meant a lot to me. It would also be remiss of me not to mention Mark E Smith. There is little I could add to this man’s litany of testimonies - perhaps John Peel said it best, "Always different, always the same." And Adam Ricketts has gorgeous, dreamy eyes."
Do you have any pets?
"To keep as my personal playthings? As prisoners? No, I certainly do not. Animals were not put on this earth as our personal property, to imprison, murder and gorge ourselves on. I don't wish to force my beliefs on others, but I really do feel it’s a case of Animal Rights vs Human Wrongs, and that’s all I can say really."
And finally, getting any?
"Yeah, I can’t complain. I’ve got ‘em queuing up for it, actually."
"Hey Mickey!" is out now on 4AD.
